Cans for Calais
Thank you for such a generous response to the Cans for Calais appeal on 17th March. As a community, we are pleased that we have been able to help people who have fled their homes to find sanctuary elsewhere and to encourage children to reflect on some of the moral and ethical issues which arise from the current refugee crisis.
Every class took part in a PSHE lesson linked to the theme of sanctuary and Miguel Amortegui came in to talk to us in assembly about his experience of working with refugees in Calais.
The Governors were interested in finding out about the impact of the week and came in to talk to the children on 21st March.
Some of the quotes from these conversations were:
“There are wars in some parts of the world and people have to flee for safety.”
“We should make refugees feel welcome and remember them all
the time.”
“People had to walk a long way as their country was having
a war.”
“Lots of people had children with them.”
“It’s sad if people had to leave their country and only take
one suitcase with their favourite things.”
“You need to be safe and comfy”
“The cans are because they didn’t
have much money
“after the assembly it made me feel
like helping and being nice.”
Watch the video below to see the next stage in the journey of the cans! They have been delivered to the distribution centre and are now ready to be delivered to families in Calais and Dunkirk.
